Well Street Retreat

I've mentioned before that it is difficult to walk around town where pavement widths are narrow while maintaining distancing and there is a plan to help at least with part of that. The worst part of town, however, is the approach to it from Well Street. That's the part at Pen Barras corner or between Wernfechan and Station Road.

Here, if there are pedestrians on the footway, your options are very limited. At the start of lockdown, you could easily step into the road. No longer. It's too busy and because this stretch is more difficult than most, your options are very limited.

The problems are that:
  • The stretch of road is short. Pedestrians have insufficient time to see and evaluate traffic.
  • Speeds are relatively high. There's nothing to slow traffic down. Traffic has never and does not now give any heed to pedestrians.
  • There are multiple junctions, Well Street to Station Road and Wernfechan and Llanrhydd to Well Street.
What are the solutions? There's no opportunity to widen pavements but you could slow traffic right down by some sort of measure. Yes, it's an A road but it's also on the fringe of the town centre.
