Meanwhile...

My guess is that there'd be much more of a commemoration but for the fact the the town is in coronavirus lockdown. There are nevertheless some reminders locally of the end of the Second World War. In spite of coronavirus, there was a street "party" nearby—we could hear it—and fair play to them.

People liken the spread of coronavirus to the First and Second World Wars. Certainly, the military is currently treating coronavirus like one. The sheer scale of the coronavirus is huge and its impact on poorer nations as significant as a war. So far, thank God, things have not been as bad as they could've been or as bad as feared... but we should not relent. We need to await the results of the Italian and German relaxations. But, as things stand, the wars were worse. This is not to minimise coronavirus and the covid-19 illness: it certainly has the potential to be classed in the same bracket as the wars. Each generation has its own tribulations.
