End of Grass Impasse

After a bit of a coronavirus-related gap, roadside grass cutting is back, as of today. The council is mowing verges for the first time since there were initial concerns about whether there would be sufficient staff to undertake all highways' basic duties. Verge cutting was classed as less essential. There were also complaints about the lack of it but, honestly, there was really nothing wrong with an untidy verge (aside from safety concerns at corners).

Meanwhile, cuts to green spaces in residential areas were suspended for a shorter period and contractors were back out quite soon, albeit fewer of them and without initially treating large areas of grass other than edges and borders, pending a full haircut.

This child looks slightly out of depth in uncut, longer grass. Other than that, what's wrong with leaving open areas to thrive naturally?

Here, again, there was essentially nothing actually wrong with a piece of land that had been left to grow, with tall grasses cavorting and dancing almost erotically wildly in the wind. It allowed wild flowers to flourish. Such areas need not be so manicured. But the reason for the cuts to verge and green spaces was not to smarten them up (in spite of complaints received) but it was more pragmatic: the length of grass was soon likely to exceed the ability of the mowers to cut it.

In other news, Huws Gray re-opened today, for pre-arranged collections only (with timed slots). They have joined Richard Williams, which re-opened on April 27th (for existing account customers only).
