Mike Hession RIP

Another death. This time, it isn't someone in the public eye, just an ordinary person. It's Mike Hession, known in his retirement for his deliveries around Rhuthun/Ruthin of leaflets and of the Clwyd Connection magazine. Few mere mortals get an obituary, these days (remember when older people used to grab the local newspaper and straightaway turn to the 'Obits'?) but the editor of Clwyd Connection gave him a splendid and effusive page. To be honest, till I read it, I had no idea.

Mike will also be remembered for the way he treated his house, which was part of Y Parc development, on and behind Denbigh Road. Not to everyone's taste, admittedly, Agincourt, as it was named, was something of Mike's fantasy, complete with mock-timber framing, herringbone pattern, heraldic shields, even a moat and drawbridge. Ironically, of course, Agincourt was a conquering English victory against the French. In England, Henry V is something of a hero. In France, he's seen as a heartless butcher. It took peasant girl Jean d'Arc to see the English off to huddle at Calais.

When not pulling or pushing a shopping trolley loaded with leaflets or booklets, Mike would sit on a bench outside the Old Courthouse and watch the world go by. He was very friendly and approachable and, although he never knew me well, you wouldn't've known it from the way he greeted me.
