Autumn Comes Early

This week, we had to remind ourselves that this wasn't autumn.

Heavy rain from the north east this week dumped on land that had already been saturated last week, thanks to a virtually continuous week of heavy rain. A fortnight of rough weather and the land could not cope. The result was surface flooding and some swollen rivers. Because it was from the north east, by the time the rain reached the Dyfrdwy/Dee catchment, to some extent it had dissipated. The Clwyd catchment wasn't quite so fortunate and levels were higher than they had been since November 2012.

The gauge at Pont Howkin did not cause alarm, though. That at Pont Dafydd, Dinbych, at its highest, was two inches above the 2012 peak.

In Rhuthun/Ruthin, the Clwyd was agitated and had burst its banks at Cae Ddol but not at Glasdir. Land at Glasdir was sodden but that was due to the water table and not the river.

There were several road closures in north east Wales. That in the Rhuthun/Ruthin area was at the old quarry between Valley Lodge and Llanarmon. The closure did not prevent motorists taking a whack at it, though.
