Local Politicians Hit the Headlines

Reported in yesterday's Daily Post were comments made by Denbighshire council's lead member for well-being, who happens to be Rhuthun/Ruthin county councillor Bobby Feeley. She referred to the negative impact on the Rhyl regeneration project of homeless people in temporary accommodation in hotels and guesthouses along Rhyl's promenade.

This comment prompted Llyr Gruffydd AM, also a local politician, to brand her comments akin to "social cleaning".

Whatever the rights or wrongs of this episode, looking at things from a purely Rhuthun perspective, many in town feel that Rhyl always gets the money, to the detriment not just of everywhere but especially Rhuthun. It's true: we could do with a little more development spend hereabouts but it's also true that Rhyl is Denbighshire's number 1 problem. Successive approaches have failed to tackle the issue but the current regeneration project including Sun Centre Two, a Travelodge, Premier Inn and refurbished theatre and underground car park plus ambitious plans for the slum that is the Queen's Market look set to be real game changers.

Whether homeless people should or should not be temporarily housed along Rhyl's seafront is a debate to be had but it's also fair to say that Rhyl town centre needs all the help it can get. Perhaps if there's any change left over it might come out way.
