It's rather amazing that the food hygiene rating of 1 out of 5 for Caffi Rh/Café R remains so well hidden. We can't recall it featuring on Facebook or local newspapers. And, today, the place was full to bursting with customers. We still think it's only a matter of time. As an aside, there still appears to be a short menu, suggesting there isn't enough capacity in the kitchen.

Meanwhile, Café R isn't the only Rhuthun/Ruthin establishment to find itself awarded a disappointing 1/5. It's joined by three others: Leonardo's; the Fox & Hounds, Pwllglas; and the associated Charcoal Grill.

But, there's worse news. The Ocean Pearl has scored zero during its inspection of November 2018. It's inspection of 2017 (it first) resulted in a score of 3. But the wooden spoon must go to Rhuthun Kebab & Burger also scored 0 in its October 2018 assessment. A year earlier, it was only 1. From 2011 to 2015, this scored 5. The better news is that in April 2019, it bounded back to 4.

Back to those scoring 1 and Leonardo's score is particularly disappointing. It was among the first inspections, scoring 2 in 2011. It reached 3 in 2014 and 5 in 2017. Yet, in November 2018, it regressed all the way beyond its original score to 1. It requires improvement regarding food handling and major improvement regarding the management of food safety.

Between 2011 and 2014, the Fox & Hounds scored 4. This slipped to 3 in 2017 and is now 1. Cleanliness & conditions and the management of food safety both required major improvement.

And the Charcoal Grill was last examined in August *2017*. This was its first inspection under that name. Previously, it was the Flame & Grill and it scored 5, from its first assessment in 2014.

The 2018 assessments have seen a further 13 businesses assessed, with one achieving 4 and the remainder 5. Of those receiving at least one previous assessment, when comparing 2018 with 2017, 76 are unchanged and 12 have got better. The improvers are:
  • Panda Garden (3 to 4);
  • Eagles' Bakery (4 to 5);
  • W & G Jones butchers (3 to 4);
  • Wernfechan chippie (Aydin's) (2 to 5);
  • Three Pigeons (2 to 3);
  • Ysgol Carreg Emlyn (4 to 5);
  • Schola Ruthinensis (3 to 5);
  • John Jones & Son butchers (4 to 5);
  • Patchwork shop (4 to 5);
  • Ruthin Pizza (1 to 4); and
  • The Myddelton Grill (4 to 5).
A staggering 10 were worse in 2018 compared to 2017. These are:
  • Leonardo's (5 to 1)
  • The Fox & Hounds (3 to 1)
  • Welcome takeaway, Borthyn (5 to 2)
  • Ysgol Carreg Emolyn (5 to 4)
  • Happy House (3 to 2)
  • Café R (4 to 1)
  • Ocean Pearl (3 to 0)
  • Rhuthun Kebab & Burger (1 to 0)
The business with the biggest gain is the Rhuthun Tandori, which went from 0 to 5 in one go. This had a disastrous write-up in 2017.
