School's Out... for Ever

About now, Rhuthun/Ruthin's primary children will be leaving their schools on the Rhos Street site for the very last time. Ysgolion Rhos Stryd a Phen Barras close today. An end of an era, indeed, as the site has been continuously occupied for educational purposes for 172 years, since 1846. The school breaks up for Easter two days early, to allow what the schools call the "decant" to their new home a mile away.

The 1846 school building...

Will that new building still be in educational use in 172 years' time? I doubt the new schools were built with that sort of longevity in mind but, even if they were still intact in 2190 AD, I doubt we will be needing primary education as we know it or perhaps by then we may not even need any education at all...

... and the 1984 Pen Barras extension

The $64,000 question, however, is, not will the site be occupied in 2190 AD but will the new building be ready after Easter 2018. It may not look like it but it will be. It has to be. Snow stopped play but this was only part of the delay and Wynne Construction could not hand the site over as planned on March 19th. They're working very hard to complete. There's now no alternative, unless the pupils wait till half term in May...
