In Passing—September 2017

Day One was busy but day two of the Open Doors Rhuthun/Ruthin weekend was far less so. Sundays always are slower but, this year, there was morning rain till early afternoon. The county archive nevertheless put on a vintage display and showed some interesting pieces from its extensive collection, featuring some memorabilia from the pre-1974 Denbighshire. It enjoyed a steady stream of visitors and, no doubt, benefited from the continued interest in the Royal Oak opposite.

There was a ceramics valuation at the Craft Centre. Rather sadly, this proved to be very thinly attended. There was a jazz duo perched under one of the canopies to keep dry playing to absolutely no one.

In a case of musical chairs, Compass Financial (financial advisers) has moved out of its premises in the former Gareth Lynch jewellers to the former Hoethe kitchen showroom, opposite. On the first weekend of September, the owner of Bijou was moving his dress hire business from the premises next to Harris Toys, also Clwyd Street, to the vacant Compass/Lynch premises. This is a good move. It means that more people are likely to browse inside the beautifully restored Lynch building, with its beams. The picture below was taken after redecorating by Bijou but before any stock had moved in.

Earlier this month, the Royal Mail has been busy with a pot of red paint treating our letter and pillar boxes. Let's face it, some were in desperate need to a coat of paint. They now look resplendent.

Now in the hand of Denbighshire county council, Café R now has a new menu. It's just a little confusing to understand but the quality of food is no less good.

Work has started on the former Niagara health care site on LĂ´n Parcwr. Contractors are scraping up the grass to the building's right and dumping it on the area at the front (presumably to level it off). This will then create a customer car park for the eventual new arrival... Wynnstay Farmers.

Ysgol Brynhyfryd is announcing to the world that it was the best school in Denbighshire for both A levels and GCSEs. These are based on provisional results.

Meanwhile, the project to fence and gate off the school is now complete.

Work has begun on creating some 20 further spaces at the county hall car park.,,

... as the Co-op sees the introduction of this bollard designed, no doubt, to assist motorists in not running over this blockwork triangle.

This delightful garden on Wernfechan features a meadow of wild floors on one side of the front garden. Not only does it look good, it reduces the need to mow.

The Greyhound Rescue Wales shop in Well Street is about to close. We've said before that this shop is something of an unusual find.

No. 43A Well Street, below, has changed hands several times recently. It's about to open as a third barber.

Castle Bell has morphed again. It still sells daily, weekly and monthly newspapers plus a diminished range of magazines. It's now majoring on trinkets and some perfumes. An odd combination, to be sure.

Any self-respecting "In Passing" post would be incomplete without reference to the chaos that is Corwen Carpets. Here, at last, are some names on the premises, although they're to be found in not the ideal position, at below window height. There are still references to the former building society, above the shop.
