Glasdir Frontier

Later this morning on Radio Cymru's "Post Cyntaf" news & current affairs programme there will be a report on yesterday's surprise at the Glasdir primary schools site. It will also be featured on "Heno" on S4C at 7.00 p.m. on Monday. Look out for Yours Truly making a comment on the telly!

Yesterday's surprise announcement is likely to have some serious implications. There's talk of a whole year's delay, as the work already carried out will need redoing. The two schools may not now open till Easter 2019.

Initially, there were those who dismissed the find literally as nothing more than some old dumped rubbish but the Powys Clwyd Archaeological Trust now thinks differently.

Said the trust, "These unearthed fragments appear to be from early Romano-British pots and tiling. The number of them in the trench would indicate the need for further and major investigations. We have no option but to recommend a full scale archaeological excavation of the construction site and this may take 12 months or more to complete".

The trust continued that Rhuthun/Ruthin was a known Roman settlement and that it had previously been believed that the centre of which was the current town centre, with remains also found on higher ground on Parc Brynhyfryd. No fragments or evidence had been found on the lower ground such as Glasdir. The trust was now speculating that the road from Rhuthun to Roman Prestatyn may lie near Glasdir, now with a chance of funding it.

A spokeswoman for the education authority said that although they were disappointed regarding the obvious delays, they would be co-operating fully with the trust and would commence discussions with the Welsh government about suspending the project. No one was available from Wynne Construction for comment.
