Civic Reminders

20 years ago today was the last day of the former Clwyd County and Glyndŵr District Councils. We celebrate this occasion with a look at nine images of artifacts that are still visible, even after this length of time. That these remain at all is surprising, because successor Denbighshire, 20 years ago tomorrow, was quick off the mark at removing any reference to its antecedents.

42 years ago today was the last day of the pre-1974 Denbighshire County Council. The following day, responsibility along with the former Flintshire and Edeirnion area of Meirionnydd passed to Clwyd County Council in Yr Wyddgrug/Mold.

At the same time, Glyndŵr District Council assumed responsibility for Ruthin Borough and Ruthin Rural District Councils together with Denbigh Borough Council, Llangollen Urban District Council and Ceiriog and Edeirnion Rural District Councils.

With the formation of Clwyd, the pre-1974 Rhuthun/Ruthin Denbighshire council offices and HQ were by no means redundant. Glyndŵr District Council leased it from Clwyd and it housed the majority of its 145 or so office-based administration staff.

Top row: the no parking sign on the side of today's County Hall's facade on Wynnstay Road; at the entrance to Ysgol Brynhyfryd from the footpath from Llanrhydd; the plaque marking the extension of Market Street car park, showing the later and attractive Glyndŵr logo

Middle row: a Clwyd County Council gully grill; at Lôn Parcwr; signage at Ysgol Brynhyfryd to former the storage to the school's side

Bottom row: signage referring to the pre-County Hall days when it was called plain Council Offices; pre-brand refresh Denbighshire 1996 to 2015; and... a sign that predates Clwyd/Glyndŵr and indeed is from the pre-1974 Denbighshire. Where is it? A clue: it's within the pre-1974 Ruthin Rural District Council area.

Finally, here's a rare reminder at Llys Erw that the name Clwyd lives on under social landlord & developer the Clwyd Alyn housing association, now part of the rather confusing Pennaf group.
