In Passing—January 2016

Coming shortly to Upper Clwyd Street is Jasmine House Studio. Meanwhile, the former nearby Annie's now advertises a new restaurant, No. 5, again to open shortly.

Also in Upper Clwyd Street, Ty Celf is undergoing a make-over, to include craft space within, presumably for children. Much of the window space was blocked off—by using Denbighshire county council pink bin bags!

No sooner had the county council extricated itself from its County Hall maintenance and building lease did the scaffolding go up.

Yet another shop unit to offer beauty products to women will be The Nail Bar, occupying the former Garment Spa site on Well Street.

The Well Street saga of Corwen Carpets continues. Now fully moved in to the former Santander/Newyddion Rhuthun unit with effect from December 3rd, the premises are *still* cluttered and untidy. This does nothing for public confidence.

The weather continues to be crazily mild. At the end of January, one of my neighbours had actually taken the top off his front lawn, such was the luxuriant, woolly growth over this (to-date) mild winter. In addition to daises, crocuses are now both up and out (alongside the expected snowdrops), a whole month to a month-and-a-half early. Outdoor hyacinths are well advanced. Daffodils are up and glowing yellow though, unlike in south Wales, they’re not yet out.

Yet, after a widespread frost caught out highways departments across North Wales on January 11th—including three collisions on the A525, one at Pontrhydygwaed at Rhewl, one one near Brookhouse and a third at Trefnant—we did have snow on the tops, above the snowline, from midweek to throughout the weekend but, by the following weekend, temperatures were back as high as 15°C on Sunday January 24th. The last remnant of snow is seen here, at Pincyn Llys, when temperatures on that date were 10°C in Rhuthun/Ruthin.

My favourite* hot food takeaway, Flame & Grill, unexpectedly closed w/b January 18th and has subsequently reopened under new management (associated with Rhuthun Kebab and it's interesting that Flame & Grill scored 4/5 regarding hygiene but Ruthin Kebab managed 3/5).  *My favourite takeaway proprietor/worker remains without a doubt Mahmud Aydin of Aydin's.

Repair work continued to the frontage of the HSBC, St Peter's Square, including this work on weathered sandstone, seen across the weekend of January 23rd.

More improvements outside B & M as the store has now resurfaced parts of its formerly crumbing frontage. Perhaps the landlord might now consider the fabric of the building itself.

The unofficial traffic management introduced before Christmas by Tesco at its exit seems to be something of a permanent feature. The large traffic cone at the junction itself can, however, get dragged into the path of traffic on the northern relief road, as these rather poor quality images testify. Surely a hazard.

Hoorah! Work began on the Cunning Green at both the top and the bottom and we can expect this to be completed by the end of February for a much anticipated Spring re-opening.
The unusual and desirable detached property within the grounds of Ruthin Castle, on the market for £695,000, has sold subject to contract. If, however, you fancy something even more extravagant and outrageous—complete with fire-breathing dragon at its entrance—try Castell Gyrn, added to the market on Januray 22nd, the folly near the Clwyd Gate with commanding views over the Vale. It has a cinema, butler's pantry, lodge, triple garage with basement, detached lodge, detached cottage and if that wasn't enough, planning permission for a leisure suite to the rear, including a swimming pool... all within 48 cares. The price? £3.9mil. This will earn agents Strutt & Parker about £40-50,000 in commission.

Seen just after Christmas in Well Street was this tree, awaiting collection under the Green Waste Bin scheme!

Talking of trees, during the last week of January, Ysgol Brynhyfryd felled two on its boundary with Parc Brynhyfryd and cut back a third. These were deemed dangerous. Brynhyfryd is understood to have tried to secure a contribution from its neighbour behind the fence!

Ruthin DĂ©cor's late night opening on Thursdays till 8 p.m. came to an end at the end of this month. They started later opening on Thursdays in September 2105. The store still stays open on weekdays longer than just about any town centre trader: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Looking at the image below, is it still acceptable to use the term LOL?
