There are times...

...when I despair of the Facebook page created in this Blog's name.

"Is it me or does nobody else think it's shocking and disgusting that Brynhyfryd High School have done absolutely nothing to raise money for Children in Need"
This commenter is free to express his opinion but I struggle to understand the use of the words "shocking" and "disgusting". It may be something of a shame or a pity but disgust should be reserved for that which either sickens, reviles or repulses. "Disapproval" may be the better term to use. Even the recent Ysgol Brynhyfryd Estyn inspection report doesn't fit "disgust". As things stand at the moment, the school needs to concentrate on teaching not trivia. Last year, the charity raised over £30mil and I daresay it can cope without Brynhyfryd's involvement*. After all, parents and pupils are welcome to donate online or over the phone.

Fortunately, there were more opinions supporting the school than the commenter. But there's something fundamentally wrong with large charity extravaganzas such as Need when we seem to find ourselves compelled or obliged to take part, when it becomes expected of us, when failure to join in makes you a pariah.

Social media tends towards shock. The local newspaper has picked this up. We seem to be mortally offended by everything—and it is this that actually offends me. The role of education at Brynhyfryd might then be to reintroduce a little tolerance, understanding and appropriateness in responses, not to mention a broader vocabulary that goes beyond the term "disgust".

And when everything is disgusting, what superlatives are left for the real outrages, such as France 13/11?

One commenter also made the valid point: "As a Governor of Brynhyfryd, why do people not contact the school instead of whinging of Facebook all the time." Yes, it does say *all* the time.

*—the Brynhyfryd canteen staff and some Yr 10 pupils took part in Need. The school also has an excellent record in giving.
