Huw Lewis and the News

The other announcement of interest yesterday was that Ysgol Llanbedr is saved by the minister Huw Lewis. No one likes to see a school close and politicians from all over the spectrum have applauded his decision. Yet, leaving politics aside, does the school really make sense? It's roll is just 28 pupils. Most primary aged children in Llanbedr actually go to Rhos Street. It has almost double the spend per pupil compared to other schools (because its fixed overheads are divided by fewer pupils). The Daily Post gives it just two stars out of five. Compare that to Borthyn (three stars), Penbarras (five) and Rhos Street (five). A senior Denbighshire officer suggested to the blog author that it remained open by the skin of its teeth on a technicality: there was a flaw in the consultation process.
