Lodgings

Much of the comment in Rhuthun/Ruthin town about the coming of Wetherspoon's refers to its likely impact on other pubs (and even cafés). But there will be more to this particular JDW than that. The Rhuthun branch is one of a select number to offer accommodation.

That's quite an interesting development. The last 15 years has seen an explosion in branded, budget accommodation. People who traditionally once opted for local bed & breakfasts have increasingly migrated to chains that offer a predictable standard of accommodation no matter where they stay. People know what they're going to get. Of course, this has been greatly helped by the growth in internet bookings and web-based yield management (rooms that price themselves according to how a business can predict and influence consumer behaviour).

The most prominent of these chains to offer this standard accommodation are the down market Travelodges and the more superior Premier Inns.

Now, extend these principles—a reliable brand bookable online—to a more unique proposition such as Wetherspoon's and you have quite a potent product. After all, given the choice, where would *you* wish to stay… in a plastic Travelodge in some desolate roadside location backing onto a motorway or dual-carriageway; or a building of some character that is actually located somewhere interesting. Easy question, isn't it.

So it may be that the idea of a Rhuthun Wetherspoon hotel (Wether Lodge, as they were once known) may be an attractive proposition for guests who might otherwise by-pass Rhuthun to stay elsewhere. Suddenly, Rhuthun may become more attractive to visitors. Once here, they may yet be tempted to explore the town and even eat and drink outside of Wetherspoon's. It's a thought, isn't it.

The nearest Travelodges to Rhuthun are near Helygain/Halkyn & Northop Hall on the A55; Wrecsam at the by-pass; and Rhuddlan by the large roundabout near the Marsh Warden & by-pass.

The nearest existing Wetherspoon hotel is in Shrewsbury, 45 miles away. Or Wigan, 60 miles distant.

THE CASTLE

The Castle Hotel, with its sentinel’s stare,
At attention, the pivot of town.
Gracing the east of St Peter’s fine square,
Which replaced what Glydwr once burned down.

After quite a few years of Boothian neglect
Left The Castle boarded and bare,
Before J D Wetherspoon earned some respect
With a programme of vital repair.

Not without hitches, one hastens to add,
For the fine hallway ceiling got trashed,
Making the History Society so mad
Rapid plans for reinstatement were thrashed.

Mishaps aside, who cannot be pleased
Now scaffolding’s all stripped away,
The facâde in its regilded glory revealed,
Wrought iron eager again on display.

But equally pleasing is setting a course
For the heart of the town to revive,
A step in the process which Ruthin perforce
Must embrace if it is to survive.

In year twenty twelve on the last day of Jan
The Castle’s door will reopen for trade
Inviting eaters and drinkers to be in the van -
Admiring refurbishment made.

I totally agree. I know that I always book on line and seek the best deal. Look at JDWs hotels and see the nightly rate, it's excellent and higher spec than travelodge etc.
It may well bring in a few much needed visitors to town, potentially increasing general trade.

With the Clwydian Range nearby, it might not be a bad idea to have a walker's hostel or bunkhouse in the area.

Have a look at www.independenthostelguide.com
to see what I mean. Obviously not everybody's thing, but it might generate some interest in Rhuthun.

The 'hotel' near Rhuddlan is actually a Premier Inn, but great to have the blog back!

You talk about Bed and Breakfast which it will kill. But the cafe are really going to go down with a bang, it is so hard to match the prices of a big company like WS.
I hope Ruthin can pull through.
Good Luck everyone.

But the cafe are really going to go down with a bang,

If that's the case, good riddance to them - the cafes of Ruthin are awful, soulless tearooms that all shut before 5pm. I don't normally like to support big national chains at the expense of local businesses, but the local businesses in this case simply aren't very good at what they do. I want to go somewhere I can relax and feel comfortable, drink some coffee and read a book, not sit on a hard chair on a tiled floor and be ushered out the door at 4pm.

Anyway, expect a few more visitors to town this summer as a result of the olympic torch thingie - the BBC even spotlights Ruthin as an alternative destination: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-16750151

Ruthin has been quietly doing quite well with increased visitors in the last couple of years- Ruthin Castle is embarking on a major investment after its best year ever, and other accommodation providers have been reporting very busy trade during 2011, and are looking to expansion. Wetherspoons should be welcomed by them all as what the town needs to be recognised for is for providing a variety of good quality accommodation at prices to suit different pockets. You only need to read the Ruthin Tripadvisor - http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Tourism-g552035-Ruthin_Denbighshire_North_Wales_Wales-Vacations.html - reviews to see why places like the Anchor might be struggling and The Wynnstay closed - traveller expectations are much higher than 5 years ago even and will continually invest. Businesses that don't keep moving forward won't survive. Good luck to all in 2012
