Harmless or Hurful?

Unless I missed something, there's been no Rhuthun Ymlaen/Ruthin Forward Spooktacular this year. And, an hour early, as darkness fell yesterday, did anyone else notice the number of children on the streets, "celebrating" hallowe'en? The very young ones were with their mothers, some of whom were also in fancy dress. Did the increase in numbers correlate to a lack of Spooktacular? Or was the unseasonably mild weather more to blame? Or both?

Then, by about 8 p.m., older young people took to the streets in various costumes. One, a young lad, was camply dressed as a red witch, complete with exposed back with a bra strap on view. Whatever next.

And then the rain came and the streets were deserted.

Big business has transformed hallowe'en from a day of semi-pagan ritual of yesteryear when people desired to rid evil by using lighted pumpkins, to an evening of rejoicing in the world of the almost malevolent. Mainstream media haven't helped. In a world that is increasingly wicked, I wonder why we need to encourage our children to rejoice in this. What does it gain, apart from scaring people like me into nervousness and apprehension at the risk of seeing our pets, cars or houses covered in something undesirable. For those who knocked on our door last night, as usual, we took a stand. But we shouldn't have to.

The whole point of Spooktacular was to try to restrain this growing tide of rather young children demanding money with menaces. Even the police, also party to the Spooktacular message in recent years, appear to have given up. Rant over.
