That's Torn It

Today's exciting news is that judges in the second Welsh Blog Awards have shortlisted the Rhuthun/Ruthin Blog for the Best Community Blog 2011. They've whittled 16 entries down to three and Rhuthun/Ruthin is competing against:
The Photon Blog and
We are Caerdydd
The Photon Blog is not dissimilar to Rhuthun/Ruthin in looking at what matters in (a fairly wide) community. Because it's spread across Ynys Môn in its entirety, it has the luxury of punching high. Rhuthun/Ruthin is no match. In Sir Fôn, there's always a story upon which to report. Rhuthun is unquestionably sleepy by comparison. Photon has the benefit of representing an area oft battered by the storms of politics.

I was particularly impressed by We are Cardiff, an unusual blog that collects some of the stories of Caerdydd people. Rather than trying to tackle some of the issues the capital faces, no doubt dealt with elsewhere, it considers the narrative of individual people who chose to live there. With a population over 60 times the size of Rhuthun, they’re exploiting a rich seem.

With such erudite competition, Rhuthun/Ruthin feels privileged to have reached the final.

This year, there's a "People's Choice Award" that is open to an online public vote. To help Rhuthun/Ruthin in this, we approached the town council to see if they would sponsor 9ft x 2ft banners on the Station Yard roundabout (the so-called Briec roundabout), on the Square and opposite the Tesco entrance. Alas, they said "no" : ) We can't understand their reaction. After all, the Craft Centre has got away with it in 2009 for the Art Fund Prize.

So, we've decided to distribute several thousand plastic bags to all the independent shops in Rhuthun. Each bag will encourage people to vote for us. A brilliant marketing coup. But guess what? We've discovered that as of today, there's a compulsory charge of 5p per bag and no one's likely to want any : (

One of the Rhuthun/Ruthin Blog strengths is its comments. And, as if to kill the blog’s chances of ever winning, along comes this, from 29th September:

"Sadly, people who have nothing better to do than add insults, jibes and utter drivel to threads deter us sensible Ruthin people from contributing to this site".
That's torn it and it really makes me feel somewhat digalon that our community feels it cannot contribute here because of a minority. The alternative is Comments Moderation. We've been here before, of course, and this issue seems to rear up periodically. Moderation equates to censorship. A necessary evil?

I am sure the 29th September commenter also had in mind the comment yesterday at 9.38 p.m. that included, "gud to C main man nic and mooreen openin de new pante siop in de town". All, please keep to Cymraeg or English. Oh, and I wasn't aware Ruthin Décor was going to sell panties.
