An Odd Time of Year

Is it me or are the New Year revellers on the Square getting younger every year? Just like the largish numbers of youthful police dotted around, too. I often wondered whether I should've joined the police, for this is the one profession where you actually get younger year by year. Except, of course, you have to work over New Year.

Anyway, because or in spite of the police, this year's New Year event passed smoothly enough and the grotesque pink graffiti that manifested itself on the town hall, Spread Eagle Books and, left, Caledfryn Credit Union was actually there between Christmas and New Year and nothing to do with Friday night/Saturday morning. It's sad that even Rhuthun has to succumb to vandalism of such an invasive sort as this. "Mindlessness" is a word for it but this would be unfair on zombies.

Back to New Year and, actually, there was an ambulance called to the Square on New Year's Eve, though I have no idea why.

I've known larger celebrations but I doubt that the landlords were complaining. At least there's one occasion amidst the festivities that gets busy. The rest of the time hasn't been particularly lively, truth be told.

Ditto the shops between Christmas and New Year. Thursday 30th seemed the busier day, by far. Too many shops decide to close between Christmas & New Year. Is this a classic chicken & egg situation? Does everyone head off to Chester, making opening pointless? Or do people forsake Rhuthun precisely because it appears closed? There were about 25 shops not open.

Better news in the run up to Christmas, though. There's an interestingly mixed picture. There are those who say that business this year was dire, thanks to the weather. But there are also an equal proportion of people who felt that it must've been this very weather that seemed to encourage people to shop more locally. There were tales of people (re?)discovering some of what Rhuthun had to offer, with some surprise. Long may that continue.

The last vestiges of November & December's snow actually left the hills on Thursday, only for some more (a lighter dusting) to follow yesterday morning.
