Brynhyfryd Sixth

You may have noticed a large hoarding outside Ysgol Brynhyfryd, announcing today’s sixth form evening. Failing that, there was an advert in last week’s Free Press.

We’re used to seeing flash adverts for Colegau Llandrillo, Iâl/Yale a Glannau Dyfrdwy/Deeside. It comes as something of a surprise that Ysgol Brynhyfryd feels it needs to advertise. This at a time when Brynhyfryd is reported as having its largest sixth form ever, one where most of its students get to their first choice university, too. As with its earlier years, Brynhyfryd School is a success.

But things are changing. From September 2010, it’s reported that sixth formers will have far more of a choice than just between academic courses at school and vocational ones at “coll”. Coleg Llysfasi and Ysgolion Brynhyfryd, Uwchradd Dinbych/Denbigh High, Glan Clwyd and the Brigidine Convent School are teaming up to offer a far greater range of subjects. It means that you can do some subjects at locally Brynhyfryd or Llysfasi, and others elsewhere. You would need to travel, of course, but this appears to be provided. In the face of such competition, it presumably means Brynhyfryd has to do far more to attract pupils studying at least for the majority of their time at the school, to retain funding and secure teachers. Hence the press adverts?

And it will no doubt introduce some strange and different school uniforms into the town, as pupils from other schools can come to Brynhyfryd. Will the excellence of Brynhyfryd become a magnet for pupils? Would there be more incentive for someone, for example, at Dinbych to enrol there and do two of three A-levels in Rhuthun? In which case, there’d be little need to advertise in the future. Interesting times ahead if you are in education…
