Our Christmas Cards

Siôn Corn arrived later than usual this year with Rhuthun’s Christmas cards, well past the deadline for surface mail to the Distant Colonies. The last surface posting date for the Australia was 1st October and for Canada, 20th October.

First off the blocks was, fittingly, First House, who began selling towards the end of October. His chosen cards were the remainder stock from last year, at £3 for 10. These were produced for the Rotary and it’s telling that there are no new ones this year.

There followed Jan’s Cards, from week beginning 2 November, to an exclusive design of a slightly tree-less St Peter’s Square, selling at £3.50 for 10. The artist is Conwy’s Jean Morgan-Roberts.

Two weeks later, Siop Nain began offering more opulent designs, each with a photo (of which there are at least three), at £2.10 ea. These are of a similar design to cards previously on sale there. There’s a suitably “cold”, wintry looking, slushy Clwyd Street with view towards dusted western hills. Quite apt as the higher hills saw their first snow of winter, on Sunday last. You get the impression the photographer arrived in Rhuthun a couple of hours too late, though, as the snow has all but gone. Another is of the Peers memorial and St Peter’s steeple, complete with glittered-up Christmas tree. A third is a montage. All very carefully manage to crop out any hint of 21st century intrusion from the motor car.
