Landmark or Pile of Junk?

Predictably, I suppose, the two letters on the new Canolfan Grefft/Craft Centre in yesterday’s Free Press pour much scorn on the commissioners and designers.

Isn’t that typical. And such pity. Why didn’t they air their views when the plans were displayed? Or when the building took its form? They say a prophet isn’t welcome in his own land and how true that appears to be of Rhuthun.

Here we have the biggest single investment ever in a craft space in North Wales. Here is the opening of a landmark that’s potentially set to rejuvenate the town. Here we have a complex that has been sorely missed by visitors last summer and throughout its closure. Here we have a facility with an established and continuing national reputation.

And here we have a building that from the entrance to its courtyard is modern, fresh, contemporary, pleasing to the eye and exciting—hopefully just like the exhibits within—and, especially when compared to its near neighbour Tesco, is a positive icon. It’s happening here, in Rhuthun, right now.

Surely we can do more than just moan.
