Another 1p increase per litre in fuel last week and the Chancellor’s deferred-for-six-months 2p per litre tax rise brought pump prices back into the news.
And Rhuthun’s petrol continues to be some of the most expensive in Britain.
Since last week, both Texaco and Esso charge 106.9ppl for unleaded or 116.9ppl for diesel, equivalent to £4.86 and £5.31 per gallon respectively.
In December 2006, we complained when unleaded had reached 90ppl. In June 2007 it was 98p, static till October 2007. By the end of October it had reached £1 and by early December 2007, £1.03, 15 per cent higher than it was a year previously. Currently, it’s 19 per cent higher than December 2006.
Between October 2007 and now, unleaded’s increased from £1.00 to £1.07, by seven per cent. Diesel over the same period’s increased from £1.02 to £1.17, by no less than 15 per cent, or double the unleaded rate. Given that there’s a higher proportion of diesel vehicles in Rhuthun than the average—owing to the distances many people in Rhuthun are forced to travel—this difference is accentuated.
Yet, talk to the garages and you’ll find that demand hasn’t fallen at all and deliveries and sales remain constant, even since prices began to rise. Why? We’ve said it before so we’ll reiterate: Rhuthun’s a dormitory town. We need cars. As we spend more on Liquid Gold, so disposable income is squeezed.
