Heads you lose?

Remember the 19 comments on local journalism left on the post about nuclear power? Those who read and contributed to those comments learnt a lot about local journalism.

Yet, may be the Free Press wasn’t so wrong in using its front page before Christmas to alert Rhuthun to the nuclear power station threat. After all, following yesterday’s UK government announcement, we are almost certain to get two on our back doorstep. And possibly from as soon as 2017.

Back in December, when the Free Press nuclear story broke, we felt that there was some sort of conspiracy active, that all along the government wanted to erect nuclear power stations.

The post entitled Conspiracy? was about a possible hidden agenda to go nuclear. The 19 comments it attracted were not on nuclear power but on local journalism. People were initially concerned that the Free Press, in using its front page for a non-local story on nuclear power, was engaging as one person put it in “sloppy journalism”. May be the story should’ve appeared on the inside pages; may be there should’ve been a quote from some worried locals.

Or, given what we now know, may be it was just a timely story.

Whichever way, we in Rhuthun have the threat of nuclear fallout just 40 miles away on the one hand while on the other *still* having the local amenity and views despoiled by the environmentally-unfriendly Clwyd Power Station. These wind turbines on the uplands west of Rhuthun are unlikely to be shelved because of the nuclear option.

For Rhuthun, we’re to have the worst of all worlds. It’s head you lose, tails you lose.
