End of the Road

There are a few gaps appearing on the shelves of Rhuthun’s Somerfield, as the store completes its journey that started as KwikSave 26 years ago and ends with its closure as Somerfield in just 19 days’ time.

The weekend was a busy one for the supermarket, as people began to realise there’s bargains to be had.

Meanwhile, delivered through everyone’s letterbox last week was the usual periodic A4 Somerfield advertising puff, altering the would-be consumer to special offers. This gives the impression of business as usual and, in fact, bread, milk and other commodities are still being delivered.

But there appear many more bargains than the flier would have us believe. Look out for the green tickets on the shelves. There’s up to 50 per cent off. When they’re gone, they’re gone, no doubt. Much of Somerfield’s own label goods are reduced. Also, some branded names. Then there’s the entire DVD stock at half-price (shifted to the front left hand side with other major reductions, all in a former chiller cabinet!). DVDs start at £1.49, though most are £2.49 or £2.99.

Meanwhile, there’s still no news as to when exactly B&M Bargains takes over.
