Catching up on Comments

Fewer comments of late but perhaps its quality not quantity.

Wind Farms

Invisus comments, “Having spoken with someone who lives by the Llangwm ones, [the turbines] are extremely noisy and sleep-disturbing a kilometre away.”

An anonymous Melin y Wig resident who appears soon to live within easy distance of turbines felt that the Forestry Commission were meant to protect wildlife and countryside. The commenter asked, “Who on earth wants to look out of their bedroom window at this view! Move house? Forget it. What idiot will want to buy my house now when the whole perimeter will be surrounded by these monsters?”. Perhaps more importantly, the commenter doesn’t want his or her children’s health ruined by the noise of the turbines.

The commenter added, “I do not know of one person… who likes them apart from the people who will profit from them”.

Invisus felt that we should all be doing something on our own homes—solar panels, small wind turbines, for example. If the Welsh government’s resources and subsidies for wind farms were only ploughed into small, individual schemes instead…

Late Night Shopping

Last Thursday's late night shopping was as quiet as the week before… in spite of more settled weather.
An anonymous town propriotress felt that Rhuthun is much too quiet after 4 p.m. whether there’s late night shopping or not. Invisus felt that it was too quiet up till 10 a.m., as well.

An earlier anonymous commenter felt that traders were doing their best but sometimes felt what was the point. The commenter felt it would be so very different if the town supported late night shopping, suggesting somewhat ironically that they already do—in Tesco. Invisus called for a strategy for late night shopping, to avoid a ‘hit & miss’ approach.

Food Miles (Apples)

An anonymous contributor feels that a third of Tesco apples were from Britain, whereas most of those at Somerfield were not. The view of Tesco’s apples accords with the Rhuthun/Ruthin survey, which showed a third of *varieties* were from Britain. The point was, it was *only* a third, yet Tesco was trumpeting help for local producers.

Gweledigaeth Rhuthun a Nadolig Rhuthun

Rhys Wynn questioned why the Nadolig Rhuthun website wasn’t bilingual. Perhaps that’s because it’s aimed at English tourists? Those same tourists, though, might themselves like to see a Welsh version, as it helps to make Wales special. If it were an official site, we’re sure it would be bilingual.

Lewis Electrics

This has drawn the most comments—six in all—following Lewis Electrics’ decision in the wake of Tesco competition to stop supplying small items such as toasters, kettles, etc.

An anonymous commenter wondered “If Lewises can’t be bothered to sell basic electrical equipment like bulbs and toasters, I think I feel quite at ease at buying bigger electrical stuff elsewhere”.

Invisus felt that internet prices and delivery times were better than via Lewis Electrics.

Meanwhile, Said Said implied that Lewis may be shooting itself in the foot with a shop notice that apparently read, "We [at Lewis’] will where possible compete with internet prices but on the same terms and with the same IMPERSONAL service".

Flag of Dewi Sant

Dafydd felt there was little historic basis for using the flag of Dewi Sant as an icon in Rhuthun/Ruthin’s address bar, rather than Y Ddraig Goch as previously. Invisus felt “any specific Welsh flag is to be welcomed”.

Invisus went on to add, “Ruthin and Denbighshire area could lay claim to another medieval flag which is relevant to the old Perfeddwlad bit of medieval Gwynedd. The Perfeddwlad being the 'middle' bit between the Conwy and Dee rivers (basically Denbighshire).

“Pre-1282, the Perfeddwlad belonged to Dafydd ap Gruffydd - Llywelyn Y Llyw Olaf's brother, and Dafydd's coat of arms was the Gwynedd four lions of red and gold as used with a slight change by Glyndŵr - but Dafydd's colours were blue and white. Should this revert to being the official Denbighshire CC flag?”
