Putting up a Fight

Last month, we looked at the Tesco effect on Rhuthun supermarkets.

During the first week of August, there appeared signs that in the wake of Tesco, Somerfield is putting up a fight. Within Somerfield's Rhuthun store is a huge array of internal and external notices stating “We’re matching Tesco of 100s of prices”. The Somerfield scissors effect is reminiscent of Tesco’s own Price Check campaign. Meanwhile, there’s nothing about Somerfield’s Tesco price pledge on its website, even now.

We’re not sure whether Tesco will be that bothered. Tesco regularly monitors its prices against Asda, Morrison’s and Sainsbury’s. There’s occasionally a barometer outside Tesco Rhuthun comparing its prices with those at the other three. No mention of Somerfield, though. The last time we saw the barometer, it indicated that over 3,000 of its products were cheaper than at Morrison’s (the nearest larger supermarket to Tesco Rhuthun). Tesco was more expensive on about 430 products, compared to Morrison's.

How many people go shopping in terms of price, these days, anyway?
