Boiled Over

Farmers' frustrations boiled over this week with a 60-strong protest outside Rhuthin's Tesco. Fresh from the mart where farmers saw tumbling per kilo prices, there were calls for supermarkets to promote Welsh meat. Foot & mouth export restrictions have resulted in a glut.

In the Free Press, a Tesco spokesman claimed it responded quickly to the crisis by stocking as much Welsh meat as possible. "All our lamb in Welsh stores is Welsh" (other than for specific promotions).

Over the year of Tesco's store in Rhuthun, there are now fewer signs and shelf labels expressly promoting Welsh products. This doesn't mean that they aren't present, only that they aren't being promoted as home produced. And the other issue is the extent to which Tesco is supporting local farmers and local producers. Tesco appears to treat Cymru/Wales as a unified 'region'. It would appear that local can mean anything from Sir Benfro/Pembroke to Sir Fôn/Anglesey.

Does this happen in Lleogr/England? Is local defined as anywhere from Penzance to Berwick-upon-Tweed? Probably not.

Stocking local products from Cymru/Wales may not actually be local at all, to Rhuthun, that is. Nevertheless, framers' leaders welcomed Tesco's commitment.
