Smoke – A History

Today, the Smoke-free Premises etc (Wales) Regulations 2007* come in to force.

It means that all enclosed public spaces must be cigarette smoke free. That’s cafés, restaurants, pubs, halls, public offices and shops. Whether you think this is good or bad depends on whether you smoke.

What it does mean is that every café in Rhuthun must now be a smoke-free establishment.

It’s interesting how Rhuthun’s café culture has slowly changed. Seven years ago, it was impossible to find a totally smoke-free café. Established cafés such as Siop Nain, The Deli (Well St), The Coffee Mill and former Craft Centre Café all had no-smoking *areas* but these were to little real effect. Ask any proprietor at that time and they’d’ve said an outright smoking ban was bad for their business (they may still think that).

The change to smoke free in Rhuthun was led by newly established cafés. The first free was Porth-y-Dwr/Watergate Team Rooms in we think 2000, followed swiftly by two other new but now extinct cafés, Lovell’s and Eagles Team Rooms.

More recently established Annie’s, Crown House and Nelson’s continue the trend. All were established in 2006.

As of today, these have all lost their unique smoke-free selling point.
