Well Street & Williams

It’s good to see significant changes afoot at the former Williams’ pharmacy, Well Street (now renamed Well Street Pharmacy). The new management is opening up the back of the shop, removing the long counters and using both electric light and lighter fittings to make the shop welcoming.

It’s not that the former pharmacy was poor, it was simply a product of its time. Many items were out-of-reach to customers or behind glass counters, acting as a barrier. The old layout had a cluttered feel. The shop was dark. And when you have a light and airy Tesco with which to compete, change becomes necessary.

The fact that Tesco seemed disinterested in selling pharmaceutical goods even when it applied for an increase in floor space must’ve been a comfort to the current proprietrix (now there’s a word you don’t hear often), who used to operate the pharmacy at Plas Meddyg surgery.

David Williams deserves a long retirement after faithfully serving the town for many, many years. In necessarily modernising the shop, the new owner deserves the town’s support. After all, setting up in business (as she did from March 2006) is a brave step, in any economic climate, whether Tesco is expanding or not.

Watch out for other changes in Well Street. The former Lewis Electrics (and latterly Grandpa’s Collectibles) shop is shortly to become a gift shop-come-bistro (under Lewis' ownership). We wonder whether they will cook by gas. Celf a Chrefft (part of Williams) is also shortly to find a use.
