The North Wales branch of the Federation of Small Businesses has thanked Denbighshire’s planning committee for rejecting Tesco’s proposals to expand in Rhuthun/Ruthin. According to the Denbighshire Free Press, its spokesman said “many… businesses in the town would have been destroyed through lack of trade”.
It was the FSB’s figures that were quoted at the planning committee last week. This demonstrated that after nine weeks of Tesco trading, most town centre businesses had already suffered a downturn of between 15 and 20 per cent, some more.
This equated to a loss of nearly £1mil of turnover, “hardly conclusive to sustaining an affluent feel in the town.”
