Local v Global

Trade at Rhuthun Tesco Ruthin was brisk today. It invariably is, each Saturday.

Yet, trade at the monthly Ruthin Produce Market was slack. It’s sad to report that it invariably is. Well, “mixed” might be a better term. Today’s Food Festival at Yr Wyddgrug/Mold might’ve had something to do with it but there always seems to be an excuse – holidays or weather or food events in Dinbych/Denbigh.

Locals really should support the Ruthin Produce Market more. The reasons are simple. The food (and other items) are produced locally; you are supporting smaller, often family-run businesses; you can meet and question the producers; and you reduce so-called “food miles”.

This is the complete antithesis of shopping at Tesco (or Somerfield & Co-op, for that matter). Tesco likes to boast about its Welsh products but few are from the immediate neighbourhood. It might help if Tesco could rectify that position but it really isn't Tesco's fault - it's everyone's, for demanding the sort of products Tesco's stocks.
