Trade War

Well known local photographer Christopher Birchall writes in the Free Press, urging Rhuthun/Ruthin’s “butchers, bakers and candlestick makers” to diversify to survive the pending “trade war” that looms, with the imminent opening of Tesco.

He feels that the biggest battle will be between existing supermarkets (there, he could be right). As for the rest, “they could even turn the situation to their advantage”. It’s the word “even” in Birchall’s sentence that may trouble those who have opposed Tesco. In spite of the positive tone of the letter, “even” suggests uncertainty.

There’s no doubt that in order to survive, the town must attract Tesco shoppers up the hill. Price competition alone will not do this. In fact, price competition won’t do this at all. Quality may, but a glance around any Tesco will show that the company has long shrugged off its pile-it-high-sell-it-cheap image and philosophy. What hope for Rhuthun/Ruthin?
