Rhos Street School Latest

Ever since for sale by tender notices appeared at the former Rhos Street schools site, there has been speculation as to what may happen to it. In fact, the signs are still there which, given that part of the plans have come unstuck, is perhaps just as well.

For the serious bidder who had plans for the main building has now had to pull out and we must again wait to see if anything develops. The reason this has crumbled, of course, relates to the situation at Schola Ruthinensis and this will take time to sort out. The focus must be on other things. Yet, there is said to be a renewed interest in the building but this shall we say is said to be in its infancy. Ahem. It's from a meithrinfa.

We understand that the Civic Association did make enquiries with Caerdydd as to whether the building should be listed as an example of a British School but the reply was that the much-altered old Rhos Street building was not a particularly good example and there were others that were better.

Meanwhile, the £3m plan to alter the hospital is approved. This will result in the demolition of the newer buildings at the rear of the school site and a parcel of land transferring to the medical site, the building of a surgery adjacent to the hospital to replace the life-expired Mount Street premises and the flattening of Mount Street to terminate as houses, possibly for the social sector. The County Council had suggested using part of County Hall as a surgery, which would have been an excellent idea, as it would continue to be centrally located and accessible to those arriving at Market Street and Wynnstay Road by bus but BCUHB felt, overall, there were more advantages in locating Mount Street alongside the hospital.

The Market Town of the Future 2 suggested that part of the Rhos Street site could be transformed into housing but this now looks unlikely. This had its advantages for older people who the plan assumed would live there, in the proximity to medical facilities. It appears that part of the land will be given over to a common space and meadow instead. We understand that the wartime buildings fronting Llanrhydd will simply be demolished.
