Five Questions

During our recent Rhuthun/Ruthin Blog survey, we asked five general questions about Rhuthun. Here’s what you told us.

1. Over the last 50 years, Rhuthun/Ruthin has expanded quite a lot. The Local Development Plan will see yet more housing. Is it time to call a halt?

About a third of you felt that further expansion threatened Rhuthun’s uniqueness. A further third believed that future development would help sustain Rhuthun’s future. The remaining third (or thereabouts) thought that young people need affordable housing.

Adding together those who favoured development against those who did not, it would appear that two thirds of those who responded to the questionnaire were pro-development and a third wished to call a halt.

2. Should we be peppering our hillsides with wind turbines?

This was clearer cut. Two thirds said “No”, about a fifth (20 per cent) said “yes” and the remainder (about 15 per cent) didn’t know.

3. There’s a possibility of Wetherspoon’s coming to Rhuthun/Ruthin. If so, do you see this as a good or bad thing?

17 per cent of responses felt that Wetherspoon’s would boost the town’s pub trade and 38 per cent felt Wetherspoon’s would appeal to people who currently don’t frequent pubs (e.g. families). Just over half of respondents therefore saw the pint glass as half full.

33 per cent or so of respondents thought that Wetherspoon’s would threaten existing hostelries. About 12 per cent didn’t care.

4. The Venue has recently changed to V2, with a different security team. Is anti-social behaviour worse or is it now better?

Most of our readers are over 35. No doubt reflecting this demographic, over 80 per cent of respondents didn’t know the answer to this question. 10 per cent felt that security was about the same now as before and these came from a range of age groups. Only one person felt that it was better (aged 45-55). Those who felt security had deteriorated were all over 55.

5. Did you think the Christmas free parking brought more people into Rhuthun/Ruthin?

This was the key question. Only 12 per cent of respondents felt that the Christmas free parking was a success. 21 per cent stated it was not. About a third weren’t sure and just under a further third didn’t use the free parking.
