More on Fuel

Rhuthun’s petrol forecourts were empty of cars last night, in spite of media warnings of a looming fuel crisis. This in spite of both garages taking their supplies from north west England, an area possibly to be affected by the Grangemouth two-day strike and the talk of subsidiary demonstrations.

Remember the September 2000 shortages? Both Rhuthun’s petrol stations very quickly ran dry. Commuters would’ve noticed the resultant cut in traffic.

The price of petrol continues to be a major talking point in Rhuthun. Fuel increased again by two 1p per litre jumps over the last ten days, from £1.069 to £1.089 per litre unleaded. At one stage, here was a 1p disparity between Rhuthun’s two stations, but only in petrol, not diesel. If you’re a diesel user, and let’s face it much of Rhuthun is, the gap widened by 3p per litre to £1.199.

There’s fresh talk of £1.50 litre (£6.82 per gallon), at the end of the summer, or a 38 per cent increase in unleaded. Think what effect that may have on the local economy and community. A tank of fuel for an average Ford Focus will increase to £82. Since these renewed £1.50 predictions on Thursday, crude has increased by a further four per cent.

Current prices as at 21 April 2008. Compare with 27 March 2008
