Slow Living

It’s gratifying to read that the current edition of the Vale Advertiser has joined this blog in calling for Rhuthun to join the “slow towns movement” otherwise known as Cittislaw, albeit from purely a tourist viewpoint.

Yr Wyddgrug/Mold’s already a member and we, here, feel that Rhuthun’s an even better candidate. We said why in September 2006—we have the heritage, culture, country & produce markets, environment, independent shopping and food.

The advantages especially in slow tourism are boundless and could be a real hook to draw in what, to be honest, have been those fairly elusive large numbers of tourists. With people thinking twice about jetting off on long haul holidays, why not attract the millions of people in Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham, who live on our doorstep?

Slow and green tourism has real benefits. People travel less far and are willing to stay longer. What better an atmosphere for chilling out than Rhuthun?

The Cittislaw concept goes well beyond tourism, though, and we have our doubts about it if it is simply seen as a machine to generate visitor-related income. It needs to go beyond that, beyond even benefiting those who live here. To be sincere, it has to be a lifestyle lived by us all.
Better not be slow in getting off the mark before our competitors do.
